Reimagining Live Performance for a Next-Generation Audience

We imagine a place where theater, concerts, dance, festivals, education, and innovation come together under one roof.

We believe that when we invest in future-facing arts technology, youth engagement, and cultural experiences that bring people downtown, we help create a stronger, more connected, and more vibrant future for our community.

We envision a better home for the Los Altos Stage Company and Los Altos Youth Theater, mainstays of our community's theater and youth theater education for over 30 years.

We don't have a design yet, and that's intentional. Our immediate goal is for the City to approve moving forward with the next phase later in 2026. As that process continues, we want the community to help shape what a future downtown theater could become.

The vision for a downtown theater did not emerge from a single organization or proposal.

The concept grew out of the City’s 2018 Downtown Vision process, which included roughly 40 community engagement activities and more than 1,500 participants.

Through workshops, surveys, neighborhood meetings, and public discussions, residents helped identify arts, culture, and gathering spaces as priorities for a more vibrant downtown.

Los Altos Theater History

  • The Beginning: 1950s-1960s

    Los Altos once had a movie theater right on Main Street. The historic Los Altos Theater was a community landmark through the 1950s and 1960s, but it closed in 1976 despite local efforts to save it. Many longtime residents still remember it as an important part of downtown life.

  • Bus Barn: 1970s

    That same year, another community theater effort emerged at what became the Bus Barn Theater. The building had originally been a school bus maintenance facility on the Civic Center campus. Community volunteers converted it into a theater in the 1970s, creating the venue that eventually became home to the Los Altos Stage Company.

  • Los Altos Stage Company: 1990s

    When the Los Altos Conservatory Theatre closed in the mid-1990s, the city helped preserve the theater assets, and the newly formed Los Altos Stage Company took over the venue in 1995. Over the next three decades, the company grew steadily, producing more than 150 shows and serving thousands of patrons annually.

  • Downtown Vision Plan - 2010s

    A major turning point came when the City adopted the Downtown Vision 2018. The plan identified a community theater as a desirable downtown destination and suggested locating it on a city-owned parking plaza. The goal was not simply a theater for plays, but a civic gathering place supporting performances, lectures, films, education programs, and community events.

  • Community Input: 2020s

    The city and theater leaders commissioned a detailed feasibility study. Researchers found a strong demand for arts programming; community support for arts and culture downtown; a viable operating model for a larger theater facility

    The study concluded that there was both a need and an opportunity to replace the Bus Barn with a larger community-scaled theater that could host a broader range of activities.

  • Today

    Prime downtown space reduced to a place for parked cars. A wide expanse of pavement, generic office buildings, and little that gives the area any identity or energy. Despite its central location, the scene feels empty, forgettable, and disconnected from the life a downtown should have. It serves a function, but it contributes almost nothing to the character of the surrounding neighborhood.

  • Tomorrow

    We are the latest chapter in this story. Rather than simply replacing the Bus Barn, we want to create a downtown arts hub for theater, music, dance, lectures, education, and community events. While still in the early stages of design discussions, the idea is to create a space downtown for year-round community activity and provide an updated and permanent home for Los Altos Stage Company and Los Altos Youth Theater.
